What Black History Month Means to Blended
Beauty
By founder, Stacey Canfield
Guyanese and many residents of the English-speaking Caribbean celebrate a momentous event in Black history. One hundred and seventy-two years ago,
African slaves in Guyana and the rest of the British Caribbean were free to embarked on a new life.
The presence of Africans in Guyana as slaves dated back to the early seventeenth century, when they were brought there by Dutch traders and
settlers.
It was during this time that a former slave, and a son of her former Dutch owner decided to run away together and truly be together. They soon gave
birth to a daughter, Louisa, born free. She married and birthed a daughter named Julia who in turn birthed a daughter named Iris. Iris and her
family travelled out of Guyana, looking for a better life. They eventually settled in Canada. Her son, Terrence, was a hopeful 18 year old when he
arrived in Canada, in 1971.
Terrence did his best to adapt to the Canadian way of life. He worked hard and became a valued member of his local community, building his own
successful business. Today, creating work for many others. He's also a loved Granddad.
Thanks Dad, for passing on to me your drive and dedication. All my love...
